Year-round average air temperature is 28C (82F), water temperature is 26C (79F). A long, powdery sandbank sits between the Indian Ocean and the two flatwater lagoons. While most people who choose to go kitesurfing at Vella Island tend to base themselves in Kalpitiya, it is possible to stay on the island overnight with some of the remote kite camps (think hammocks and tents style).
This spot is perfect for beginners because it has side shore winds. In the past year or so, there's been a few 'waiting around for the wind' periods in the winter season. Often misconception is, that we are located at Kalpitiya lagoon - we are NOT. Sri Lanka is known as the most exotic kiteboarding destinations in Asia.
Usually there are up to 3 boats at one time, i.e. 10-12 kitesurfers. Located just 15 km South of KSL, Kapaladi Lagoon is a small lagoon that offers flat waters and space for kite surfing. Srilankakite (Kitesurfing Camp) is located in Kalpitiya Lagoon in Sri Lanka (North West).

Kalpitiya Lagoon - The lagoon is about 800m wide and well over 2km long, so that just gives you an amazing playground with nearly flat water surface with just a few chops here and there.
